About encaustic monotype painting
Encaustic monotype is a unique printmaking technique that involves applying hot pigmented beeswax to a metal surface and then transferring the wax onto paper or another surface. What makes encaustic monotype stand out from other printmaking techniques is that each print is one-of-a-kind and cannot be reproduced. The beauty of encaustic monotype lies in the way the wax can be manipulated and the variety of effects that can be achieved, from fluid and organic to precise and graphic. The process of creating an encaustic monotype is both spontaneous and deliberate, requiring a balance of control and spontaneity that results in a beautiful and unique work of art.
Sonja Morin is an independent Seattle based artist that has been working with the encaustic medium for over eighteen years. The work is deeply influenced by spacial concepts and exploring the perception of space. With the intuitive understanding of spatial relationships there are efforts to capture the essence of energy of space through employing forms to create a sense of depth, movement, and dimension while honoring negative space as a crucial element.
